Bay Area Summer Festivals
Every summer there are music festivals in the San Francisco Bay Area. Those listed here are oriented towards orchestral and chamber music, and include string quartets. Most announce their programs around April and sell subscriptions as well as individual tickets. It's worth going to their sites and signing up on their mailing lists to get an announcement. We mention them here for your general information. As their programs become available, we list the specific string quartet events.
Music@Menlo -- July 18 to Aug. 9, 2014
This is a chamber music festival that takes place in and around Menlo Park and Atherton. In 2014 the 12th edition of the festival is focused on Dvorak and will take place between July 18 and Aug. 9. The artistic directors are cellist David Finckel (formerly with the Emerson String Quartet) and the pianist Wu Han. The resident string quartets for 2014 are the Danish String Quartet and the Escher String Quartet. To get more information, or download their brochure, go to www.musicatmenlo.org

Note that Music in the Vineyards is focused on chamber music and should not be confused with a very similar program offered by Napa Valley Festival del Sole (11-20 July) save that the Festival del Sole does not offer string quartet performances this year.

Founded in 1961, the Cabrillo Festival takes place each summer in Santa Cruz, about 75 miles south of San Francisco. This festival is focused solely on presenting contemporary music. The Music Director is Marin Alsop and the activity is centered around the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. The festival presents a number of different types of music, and includes performances by string quartets. In 2013, for example, the Kronos Quartet performed. The 2015 program does not include any music for string quartets. Maybe next year. For more information, see www.cabrillomusic.org
